Funded by a training grant sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and co-funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), MFP seeks to attract talented doctoral students to ensure a diverse and highly trained workforce is available to assume leadership roles in research related to the nation's mental health and drug abuse research agendas.
Qualifications
MFP Fellows are selected on the basis of their commitment to research, the focus of their research experience, academic achievement, scholarship, writing ability, research potential, financial need, and racial/ethnic minority background. Specifically, applicants must be members of one of the following racial/ethnic groups: Blacks/African Americans, Latinos/as (e.g., Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans), American Indians or Alaskan Natives, and Asians (e.g., Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Southeast Asian), or Pacific Islanders (e.g., Hawaiian, Guamanian, Samoan, Filipino). Fellows must be citizens or non-citizen nationals of the U.S., or have been lawfully admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence and have in their possession an Alien Registration Card.

The Public Investor Scholarship of $5,000 (may be two awards of $2,500 each) is available for award to an employee of a local government or other public entity who is enrolled or plans to enroll in an undergraduate or graduate program in public administration, finance, business administration, or related field. The purpose of the Public Investor Scholarship is to support the studies of full- or part-time undergraduate or graduate students with career interests in the efficient and productive investment of public funds. The winner of the scholarship is invited to attend the Government Finance Officers Association's annual conference where the award is presented. This scholarship is funded by JPMorgan Chase.

The program is intended to fund students who have been traditionally under-represented. Students applying for the Gilman scholarship can also apply for the Freeman-Asia award, but students can only accept one scholarship if both are offered. Please note that sometimes the Gilman makes available $3,000-$8,000 Critical Need Language Supplements.
