The Association has refocused and increased its efforts to assist minority students in completing their doctorates by concentrating not only on the recruitment of minorities, but also on the retention of these groups within the profession.

The goal of the Microbiology Undergraduate Research Fellowship (MURF) program is to increase the number of underrepresented undergraduate students who wish to, and have demonstrated the ability to pursue graduate careers (Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D.) in microbiology. Students will have the opportunity to conduct full time summer research with an ASM member at their home institution or at a host institution, and present research results at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students and the ASM General Meeting.
Qualifications
Applicants must be U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident, be enrolled as full-time matriculating undergraduate students during the 2008-2009 academic year at an accredited U.S. institution, be either freshmen with college level research experience, sophomores, juniors, or seniors who will not graduate before the completion date of the summer program, be members of an underrepresented group in microbiology, have taken introductory courses in biology, chemistry, and preferably microbiology prior to submission of the application, have strong interests in obtaining a Ph.D., or M.D./Ph.D. in the microbiological sciences, and have lab research experience.

The National GEM Consortium's primary focus is to administer and award full fellowships with paid internships to highly qualified under-represented students who wish to pursue graduate studies in engineering or science. GEM's program activities, however, go beyond financial support by engendering student success in academic and professional environments. GEM has a solid success record in implementing effective programs to increase the recruitment, retention, and graduation of minority students.
Qualifications
Ph.D. Program Applicants must be a senior, masters student, or graduate student of an engineering or applied science program (see website for eligible disciplines), must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0, and must contractually agree to intern with a GEM Employer member at least once early on or before the start of the Ph.D. program. Applicants must also be U.S. citizens and a member of one of the following under-represented groups: American Indian/Native, African American/Black, or Hispanic American/Latino.

Funded by a training grant sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and co-funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), MFP seeks to attract talented doctoral students to ensure a diverse and highly trained workforce is available to assume leadership roles in research related to the nation's mental health and drug abuse research agendas.
Qualifications
MFP Fellows are selected on the basis of their commitment to research, the focus of their research experience, academic achievement, scholarship, writing ability, research potential, financial need, and racial/ethnic minority background. Specifically, applicants must be members of one of the following racial/ethnic groups: Blacks/African Americans, Latinos/as (e.g., Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans), American Indians or Alaskan Natives, and Asians (e.g., Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Southeast Asian), or Pacific Islanders (e.g., Hawaiian, Guamanian, Samoan, Filipino). Qualifications
The IIPP welcomes applications from undergraduate sophomores who: 1) Are enrolled full-time at an accredited four-year baccalaureate-granting institution; 2) Are U.S. Citizens or legal residents (documentary support required); 3) Have a minimum 3.2 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); 4) Possess strong analytical skills; 5) Have a strong demonstrated interest in international affairs; 6) Are an underrepresented minority (African American, Hispanic/Latino American, Asian American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander); and 7) Plan to seek admission to a two-year master's degree program in international affairs.
