Qualifications
Applicants must be undergraduates having completed at least one semester, be 18 years or older, and be U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens. Applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA and be majoring any branch of science, math, engineering, or technology.

The goal of the Microbiology Undergraduate Research Fellowship (MURF) program is to increase the number of underrepresented undergraduate students who wish to, and have demonstrated the ability to pursue graduate careers (Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D.) in microbiology. Students will have the opportunity to conduct full time summer research with an ASM member at their home institution or at a host institution, and present research results at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students and the ASM General Meeting.
Qualifications
Applicants must be U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident, be enrolled as full-time matriculating undergraduate students during the 2008-2009 academic year at an accredited U.S. institution, be either freshmen with college level research experience, sophomores, juniors, or seniors who will not graduate before the completion date of the summer program, be members of an underrepresented group in microbiology, have taken introductory courses in biology, chemistry, and preferably microbiology prior to submission of the application, have strong interests in obtaining a Ph.D., or M.D./Ph.D. in the microbiological sciences, and have lab research experience.

Qualifications
To be eligible, a student must be registered full-time at an accredited college or university, and must be in good academic standing. The Churchill Scholarship is worth between $44,000 and $50,000, depending on the exchange rate. It covers all University and College tuition and fees (currently about $25,000). In addition, students receive a living allowance of £10,000 if enrolled in a nine-month academic program and £12,000 if enrolled in a full-year academic program. They also receive an allowance of up to $1,000 for travel to and from the United Kingdom. The Foundation also offers the possibility of a Special Research Grant of up to $2,000; this grant may cover travel for presentations at international conferences, short stays at another university or institute for special research, and other activities. Married students should consult with the Foundation about the possibility of additional support.
Qualifications
The criteria for the selection of Churchill Scholars include the following:
Exceptional academic achievement in all disciplines, but especially in the major, as indicated by course grades (previous Scholars have had a GPA of at least 3.7 and usually have 3.9 or above).
A capacity to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics by pursuing original, creative work at an advanced level as demonstrated by awards and prizes and by letters of recommendation. Applicants in the sciences and engineering will show extensive laboratory experience, internships, or other related work, while applicants in mathematics will show substantial independent work or other projects.
Scores on the Graduate Record General Test.

The Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program brings talented college seniors and recent graduates to Washington, D.C., where they are placed in congressional offices and learn about health policy issues, with a focus on issues affecting racial and ethnic minority and underserved communities. Through the nine-week program (May 19-July 26, 2008), Scholars gain knowledge about federal legislative procedure and health policy issues, while further developing their critical thinking and leadership skills. In addition to gaining experience in a congressional office, Scholars participate in seminars and site visits to augment their knowledge of health care issues, and write and present a health policy research memo that addresses a problem of concern to disadvantaged populations.

Eligible candidates must be U.S. citizens who will be seniors or recent graduates (less than 2 years) of an accredited U.S. college or university in the fall of 2008. Graduate students and individuals with an advanced degree are not eligible to apply.
