The Society for Technical Communication is a professional organization for people developing technical information through such occupations as technical writing, editing, graphical design, interface design, and Web design. The goal of the society is to improve the transfer of information about science and technology from its developer (e.g., scientist, engineer, inventor) to its user. STC scholarships benefit students working toward this goal.
Qualifications
Applicants must have completed at least one year of post-secondary education. Applicants must be full-time students. They may be either graduate students working toward a Master's or Doctor's degree, or undergraduate students working toward a Bachelor's degree. Students should have at least one full year of academic work remaining to complete their degree programs, although under exceptional circumstances an award may be granted to a student for the final half-year. They should be studying communication of information about technical subjects. Other majors, such as general journalism, electronic communication engineering, computer programming, creative writing, or entertainment, are not eligible.

Since 1973, the society has awarded 3 to 5 scholarships a year to medical and/or dental students and scientists The funds come from contributions and from the fundraising dinners. Starting in 1989, an Esther Lim Memorial Scholarship was established, the result of a bequest by Dr. Lim, a late member of the Society, and her family. In 1996, a Ruth Liu Memorial Scholarship was added by Dr. George Liu and friends to honor Dr. Liu's late wife. A third named Scholarship, The American Center for Chinese Medical Sciences Scholarship, was donated by the American Center for Chinese Medical Sciences, based at Washington, D.C., upon the dissolution of the organization, in 2004.

The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) has established the Global Change Education Program (GCEP) to promote undergraduate and graduate training in support of the Department's global change research activities. The two components of GCEP are the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) and the Graduate Research Environmental Fellowships (GREF). A major goal of GCEP is to involve undergraduate students at the end of their sophomore or junior year in BER-supported global change research, then continue this experience during subsequent undergraduate summers. SURE is designed to support individual undergraduate students during multiple years. To further improve the quality of emerging scientists in disciplines related to global change research, SURE students will be encouraged to apply for GREF graduate fellowships and postdoctoral study programs.
Deadline
February 2, 2009
Qualifications
U.S. citizenship is required for application to any of the GCEP projects.

The VEF Fellowship Program is one of the key components of VEF's mandate to enhance bilateral relations between the United States and Vietnam through international educational exchange programs that help improve Vietnamese Science and Technology (S&T) capacities. VEF provides fellowships to the most talented Vietnamese for graduate study in the United States in S&T. Fellows are selected through a highly competitive, open and transparent process. In order to produce young scientists and faculty for Vietnam, we strongly prefer Ph.D. candidates, who are recent university graduates, including young college faculty. Working experience or government affiliation is not required. Our fellowship is open to all qualified citizens of Vietnam, regardless of their gender, regional origin, and social or political background.
Qualifications
In order to apply, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements: 1) Vietnamese by citizenship and not permanent residents in, or citizens of, any country other than Vietnam; 2) College graduates with at least a Bachelor's degree in a field of science and technology (S&T) or college seniors pursuing a degree in S? 3) Overall Grade Point Average (GPA) from college of at least 7.0/10.0 or equivalent; and 4) TOEFL score (either International or Institutional exam) of at least 500. (A valid TOEFL score report is required, even if the applicant has a degree from, or has studied or lived in, an English-speaking country.)
